Drug Uses
Retin-A - (Tretinoin) is often used
to improve the appearance and texture of the skin. It produces
a mild, superficial peel of the epidermis. Retin-A
- (Tretinoin) has effects on the both the superficial (epidermis)
and the deep (dermis) parts of the skin. The major benefit
is to decrease the effects of sunlight caused aging by increasing
the speed with which the surface cells are replaced. Tretinoin
is a topical form of vitamin A. It helps the skin to renew
itself more quickly and therefore reduces pimple and blackhead
formation, and may improve the appearance and texture of
skin. The Retin-A and Avita brands of tretinoin topical
are used to treat acne. The Renova brand of tretinoin topical
is used to reduce the appearance of fine wrinkles and mottled
skin discoloration, and to make rough facial skin feel smoother.
Tretinoin topical may also be used for purposes other than
those listed in this medication guide.
How Taken
Apply a thin layer to affected area once
a day at bedtime. Use a gauze pad or cotton swab to apply
the liquid. Wash your hands immediately after use. Using
this Retin-A (Retin-A - Tretinoin) more frequently
or in excessive amounts does not improve the results, but
may increase side effects. Avoid applying near the eyes,
mouth, or open cuts since this Retin-A (Retin-A -
Tretinoin) can irritate sensitive skin. Acne may appear
to worsen when the Retin-A (Retin-A - Tretinoin)
is first used; continue therapy. It may take three to six
weeks before the full benefits of this Retin-A (Retin-A
- Tretinoin) are seen. Use mild soap when washing your face.
Do not wash face excessively. Abrasive soaps, cleansers,
medicated creams or lotions can increase skin irritation.
Consult your doctor or pharmacist about their use. Use other
acne preparations with caution while using this Retin-A
(Retin-A - Tretinoin).
How should I use Generic Retin-A?
Use Retin-A exactly as directed by your doctor.
If you do not understand these instructions, ask your pharmacist,
nurse, or doctor to explain them to you. Wash your hands
before and after applying this medication. Retin-A is usually
applied once daily at bedtime. Follow your doctor's instructions.
Clean and pat dry the area of skin where you will apply
Retin-A. Applying Retin-A to wet skin may cause skin
irritation. If you are using Renova, wait approximately
20 to 30 minutes after washing your face before applying
the medication. Apply a light covering of the cream, gel,
or solution to the area. Do not wash the treated area for
at least 1 hours after applying Retin-A. Avoid the
use of any topical products on the treated area for at least
1 hour following application of this medication. Do not
apply Retin-A to eyes, ears, nostrils, mouth, angles of
your nose, mucous membranes, open sores, or irritated skin.
If you get medication in any of these areas, rinse it off
with water. Application of an excessive amount of the tretinoin
gel may result in "pilling" of the medication. This does
not reduce the effectiveness of the medication, but if pilling
occurs, you should use less medication with the next application.
Retin-A should be used as part of a comprehensive
skin care and sunlight avoidance program that includes the
use of effective sunscreens (minimum SPF of 15) and protective
clothing. Do not stop using Retin-A if you do not
see improvement in your condition immediately. Treatment
with Retin-A may be necessary for weeks or months
before improvement is seen. If you are using Retin-A
to treat acne, a temporary worsening of acne may occur at
the start of therapy.
Warnings/Precautions
This Retin-A (Retin-A - Tretinoin)
can increase sensitivity to sunlight, wind and cold. Avoid
prolonged exposure to the sun and sunlamps. Wear protective

- Tretinoin) should be used during pregnancy only if clearly
needed. It is not known if Retin-A - (Tretinoin)
appears in breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as remembered;
do not use if it is almost time for the next dose, skip
the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do
not "double-up" the dose to catch up.
Possible Side Effects
Due to the possibility of irritation, it
is advisable to begin treatment on a small area of skin.
Exposure to the sun or to ultraviolet rays causes additional
irritation. During treatment, such exposure should be avoided
as much as possible or a sun block should be used. During
the first weeks of treatment there may be an apparent worsening
of the problem. Such a reaction is perfectly normal because
small cysts deep within the skin are being eliminated at
an accelerated rate. This Retin-A (Retin-A - Tretinoin)
can increase sensitivity wind and cold. Avoid prolonged
exposure to the sun and sunlamps. Wear protective clothing
and use an effective sunscreen. If any ingredient should
cause hypersensitivity, discontinue use.
Storage

Keep this and all Retin-A (Retin-A - Tretinoin)s
out of the reach of children.
Overdose
Applying Retin-A - (Tretinoin) excessively
will not produce faster or better results, and marked redness,
peeling, or discomfort could occur. Over dosage with other
retinoid has been associated with transient headache, facial
flushing, celosias, abdominal pain, dizziness and ataxia.
More Information
If you have been previously treated with
keratolytic preparations or exfoliants, you should wait
until any skin rash clears up before beginning even low
strength treatment. Studies of the effect of this product
on pregnant women are incomplete. For this reason, it should
only be applied when absolutely necessary and always under
a doctor's supervision. The effectiveness of Retin-A
- (Tretinoin) is almost always accompanied by skin irritation.
In the treatment of acne, this phenomenon is directly related
to the effectiveness of the product and disappears once
applications are more spaced out. Cosmetics may be used,
but clean skin thoroughly before applying the Retin-A (Retin-A
- Tretinoin).
