Common uses
This medicine (Amaryl - Glimepride)
is a sulfonylurea used to treat diabetes mellitus (sugar
diabetes).Amaryl is in a class of drugs called sulfonylureas.
It is used to help control blood sugar levels. Amaryl
is used with diet and exercise to treat noninsulin-dependent
(Type II) diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). Insulin or metformin
(Glucophage) may also be used in combination with Amaryl,
if necessary.
Before using
Additional monitoring of your dose or condition
may be needed if you are taking chloramphenicol, dexfenfluramine,
fenfluramine, gemfibrozil, monoamine oxidase inhibitors
(maois), oxyphenbutazone, phenylbutazone, sulfa antibiotics,
certain "water pills" (diuretics such as hydrochlorothiazide),
or medicine (Amaryl - Glimepride) for high blood
pressure or heart conditions (ace inhibitors). Inform your
doctor of any other medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy,
or breast-feeding.
Use of this medicine (Amaryl - Glimepride)
is not recommended if you have a history of acidosis. Contact
your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns
about taking this medicine (Amaryl - Glimepride).
Amaryl Precautions
Tell you doctor if you have kidney disease, have liver
disease, have thyroid disease, have type 1 diabetes, have
a serious infection, illness, or injury, or need surgery.
Amaryl should not be used without first talking to your
doctor if you are pregnant or are planning a pregnancy.
As it might passes into breast milk and may affect a nursing
infant. Follow diet, medication, and exercise routines closely.
Changing any of these things can effect your blood sugar
levels. Avoid alcohol. It lowers blood sugar and may interfere
with your diabetes treatment. Tell your doctor and dentist
that you are taking this medication before you undergo any
surgery.
Directions
Follow the directions for using this medicine
(Amaryl - Glimepride) provided by your doctor. Take
this medicine (Amaryl - Glimepride) with breakfast
or your first main meal.
Store this medicine (Amaryl - Glimepride)
at room temperature in a tightly-closed container, away
from heat and light. If you miss a dose of this medicine
(Amaryl - Glimepride), take it as soon as possible.
If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed
dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not
take 2 doses at once.
Cautions
Before you begin taking any new medicine
(Amaryl - Glimepride), either prescription or over-the-counter,
check with your doctor or pharmacist. Do not exceed the
recommended dose without checking with your doctor.
Follow the dietary plan provided by your
doctor. This medicine (Amaryl - Glimepride) may cause
increased sensitivity to the sun. Avoid exposure to the
sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you
react to this medicine (Amaryl - Glimepride). Use
a sunscreen or protective clothing if you must be outside
for a prolonged period. Do not drink alcohol without first
discussing it with your doctor.
This medicine (Amaryl - Glimepride)
may cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Signs of hypoglycemia
include an increased heart rate, headache, sweating, tremor,
increased hunger, changes in vision, nervousness, or tiredness.
Discuss with your doctor or nurse how to handle hypoglycemic
reactions.
If you plan on becoming pregnant, discuss
with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine
(Amaryl - Glimepride) during pregnancy. It is unknown
if this medicine (Amaryl - Glimepride) is excreted
in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking this medicine
(Amaryl - Glimepride).
Possible side effects
Side effects, that may go away during treatment,
include dizziness, weakness, headache, or nausea. If they
continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. If you
notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor,
nurse, or pharmacist.
If you take too much
If overdose is suspected, contact your local
poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms
of overdose may include lightheadedness, sweating, rapid
pulse, tremor, confusion, seizures, and loss of consciousness.

Drug interactions

ketoprofen (Orudis, Orudis KT, Oruvail), diclofenac (Voltaren,
Cataflam), etodolac (Lodine), indomethacin (Indocin), nabumetone
(Relafen), oxaprozin (Daypro), and naproxen (Anaprox, Naprosyn,
Aleve), a sulfa-based drug such as sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim
(Bactrim, Septra), sulfisoxazole (Gantrisin), or sulfasalazine
(Azulfidine), a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such
as isocarboxazid (Marplan), tranylcypromine (Parnate), or
phenelzine (Nardil), a beta-blocker such as propranolol
(Inderal), atenolol (Tenormin), acebutolol (Sectral), metoprolol
(Lopressor), and others, a diuretic (water pill) such as
hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, Hydrodiuril), chlorothiazide
(Diuril), and others, a steroid medicine such as prednisone
(Deltasone, Orasone, others), methylprednisolone (Medrol,
others), prednisolone (Prelone, Pediapred, others), and
others, a phenothiazine such as chlorpromazine (Thorazine),
fluphenazine (Prolixin, Permitil), prochlorperazine (Compazine),
promethazine (Phenergan), and others, phenytoin (Dilantin),
isoniazid (Nydrazid), rifampin (Rifadin, Rifamate), or over-the-counter
cough, cold, allergy, or weight loss medications. Drugs
